This ignited a discussion as to the safety of the procedure and its scientific bases. Some health professionals started to share their experience as follows,

Responder1: Hmmm, for some of these, they must come with reference ohhh. I met a lady who heard blending carrot to drink is a good system cleanser. She was drinking every day for two weeks. By the time she came to us her liver enzymes had shoot more than 10 times, indicating liver cirrhosis. So please let share them with care. Some people take it literally and later harm themselves with it.

Response2: Does it mean carrot is bad for the liver in a form of drinking?

Reponder1: I’m not saying they are bad or good, must be done with care. I have been searching for research to ascertain those claims that they work but to no avail. We don’t know at what dosage it is good for the body neither do we know the side effects. I won’t take it and at least by experience I now know it can be harmful.

As other professionals enlightened the page about the issues, the best use, and caution their use, MedCircles team took the opportunity to interview a Registered Dietitian, Mr. Dickson Yaw Ayesu who is with the Darbem Medical Centre in Ashaiman to help in the professional use of these methods. Below is the edited excepts of the interview;

Question1: What is your take on blended vegetable for drinks?

Response: Well….I do think blended vegetables are firstly fresh, which means it will require more effort for the GI tract (gastrointestinal tract also known as digestive tract), liver and kidneys to process compared to if they are cooked.
If vegetable drinks are taken once in a while, it’s fine but if its done consistently daily, you are most likely letting these organs work over time daily and that can lead to liver cirrhosis and other complications

Question2: Do you have any idea as to the effect of blended garden eggs leaves serving as a kidney cleanser; is it scientific?

Response: I don’t think so. I honestly haven’t come across that.

Question: But will you professionally advice same?

Response: I wouldn’t because my main concern will be how much tannins are being taken in.
Tannins are not healthy for the kidneys and leaves have them in abundance so by deduction, I will assume that garden egg leaves have a level of tannins in it and that will be counter-productive to kidney cleansing.
You might show a short-term improvement in kidney function but long-term effects might be more devastating.

Question: Can you explain to the lay man what tannins are?

Response:They are chemicals found in plants including fruits, leaves, more specifically green leaves
They form part of the makeup of most parts of plants.

Question: So, what is your advice for the public as to the use of blended vegetables contrary to continue advocacy for them on set, radio etc. Are they safe at all?

Response:Even the basic tenets of religion tell us not to overdo things… well treated and blended vegetables are good because you get wholesome water-soluble vitamins in them but it must be done occasionally… focus must be on cooked vegetables because they are more sterile and less stressful on the GI tract…for the use of home remedies to counteract illness, it’s better to see a registered healthcare professional for guidance and directions
