WHO warns of disease outbreak risk following Myanmar earthquake

Following a magnitude 4.8 earthquake that struck eastern Myanmar near the Thai border on October 27, the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns over potential disease outbreaks in the affected region. The tremor caused significant damage to critical infrastructure, including healthcare facilities, water systems, and sanitation networks, heightening risks of waterborne illnesses such as cholera, typhoid, and acute watery diarrhea. Disrupted access to clean water and hygiene resources further exacerbates vulnerabilities, particularly for displaced populations.

Thushara Fernando, WHO Representative in Myanmar, speaking with ETHealthWorld via video after visiting affected areas including Nay Pyi Taw, said hospitals are overcrowded, medical supplies are running low, power and fuel shortages are worsening the crisis.

The WHO emphasized that overcrowded temporary shelters, combined with inadequate sanitation, could also fuel respiratory infections like pneumonia and COVID-19. Children, the elderly, and those with preexisting health conditions face heightened risks. The organization is collaborating with local authorities and partners to assess needs, deliver medical supplies, and strengthen disease surveillance. Emergency health kits, water purification tools, and treatments for diarrheal diseases are being prioritized.

Myanmar’s healthcare system, already strained by political instability, conflict, and underfunding, grapples with existing challenges such as dengue fever, malaria, and low vaccination coverage. The WHO warned that ongoing violence in the region could hinder aid delivery and disease containment efforts. Authorities urge immediate action to restore water access, deploy sanitation resources, and ensure healthcare access to mitigate post-disaster health crises.
